Gamrie Dog Field

The cliffs at Gamrie drop away like someone's sliced the landscape with a knife. This is proper coastal Aberdeenshire - the kind of place where you understand why people used to name their dogs after it. The Dog Field sits on headland just above Banff, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a field where locals have historically exercised their dogs, with the North Sea crashing below and nothing but rough grass and wind between you and the edge.

Walkers will find this worthwhile as part of a longer coastal ramble around Banff. Families with older kids who don't mind muddy boots will manage an hour here, though very young children need close supervision near the cliff edge. History enthusiasts might appreciate the old coastal routes and fishing heritage embedded in these cliffs, though there's little on-site explanation.

With Gamrie Bay Caravan Site less than a mile away, this is a natural add-on to a park holiday in the area. Park up, walk off the driving, breathe in the cold air. It costs nothing, demands nothing, and gives back something proper - which is often enough.
