Gambra Hill

The walk up Gambra Hill rewards you with proper 360-degree views across Gloucestershire - moorland, farmland, and on a clear day, the Malverns rising to the west. It's not a particularly demanding ascent from Cheltenham, making it accessible for most fitness levels without requiring fell-running kit.

What you get is essentially a wide open hilltop with bracken and grassland, the kind of spot where you can actually see where you're going for miles. The summit itself is modest - no dramatic cairn or shelter to announce you've arrived - but that's rather the point. Walkers and anyone who fancies a straightforward couple of hours in the Cotswold Air will absolutely get value from it. Families with older kids won't struggle, though toddlers might find the return journey tedious.

The beauty here is proximity to Cheltenham. You're not driving for ages, and you can combine it with other walks in the area without over-committing your day. There's nothing touristy about it - no visitor centre, no Ice-cream van, no phone signal if you're unlucky. Bring water and reasonable boots.

If you're staying at Mayfield Park, it's close enough to consider as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. Go on a clearer day if you can - mist rolls in quickly and you'll lose half the point of climbing up.
