Galsham Wood

The woodland at Galsham sits just outside Bideford as a proper stretch of mature trees - the kind of place you wander into expecting nothing much and come out having had a genuinely decent walk. It's dense enough that you lose the sound of the road within a few minutes, which is rare this close to town. The paths wind through mixed woodland with enough variation to keep you interested for an hour or so without it feeling like a marathon.

This works well for families wanting to tire the kids out without committing to a full moorland trek. Dog walkers love it. The canopy's thick enough to offer real shade on those rare scorching days, and the ground's relatively well-drained even after rain. You'll get birdsong, the occasional glimpse of woodland creatures if you're lucky, and a genuine sense of having stepped away rather than just strolled around the park.

There's no entrance fee or formal gates - you simply head in. Allow a couple of hours maximum if you're dawdling. Winter's actually rather nice here because the trees thin out enough to see through, and spring brings the whole place properly alive. Summer gets busy but never rammed.

If you're basing yourself at Coastal Cabins Glamping or Atlantic Horizons nearby, this makes an excellent half-morning slot before heading to the coast. It's the kind of walk that genuinely feels restorative without requiring any real fitness or planning. Just show up with decent boots and go.
