Gallows Hill

The walk up Gallows Hill near Salisbury rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Wiltshire plains - the sort of outlook that makes you understand why people settled here centuries ago. It's not a mountain, but that's rather the point. At around 200 metres, it's an easy climb from the surrounding chalk downland, and you can knock it out in under an hour if you're just after the summit views.

The name carries grim history, though there's little to see now beyond the trig point and the landscape spreading beneath your feet. On a clear day you catch sight of Salisbury Cathedral in the distance, which anchors you geographically. The hill itself is open chalk grassland - no scrambling required, just steady walking. It's the kind of place where families with younger kids won't struggle, though the initial ascent can feel a bit steep if you're starting from the base of the slope.

Walkers and landscape photographers get the most from this one. Historians might be interested in the backstory, but don't expect interpretation panels or formal infrastructure up top. You're paying nothing to visit, and the payoff is genuine downland atmosphere rather than any particular attraction.

If you're camping at Chalke Valley Camping just down the road, this makes a solid morning outing before lunch. Marshwood Farm Camping is a touch further but still workable. The best light is either early morning or late afternoon when shadows flatten the chalk ridges. Avoid midday heat if you can help it.
