Gairlochy Park

The car park at Gairlochy is small and unassuming, but what lies beyond those trees is worth the short walk. This is a proper nature reserve where the Caledonian Canal slips through woodland, and the whole thing feels genuinely wild rather than manicured. You'll spot red squirrels if you're lucky, roe deer cutting across the paths, and in spring the wildflowers get going properly. The canal itself is the draw - watching the lock gates operate is oddly mesmerising, and the towpath gives you a straightforward walk without any faffing about with terrain. Most people do forty minutes to an hour here, which is spot on for breaking up a drive or fitting it round other plans. It's free to visit, and there's no entrance fee nonsense. Winter can feel a bit bleak and muddy, so spring through autumn is when you'd actually want to linger. Families with younger kids will enjoy spotting wildlife and the sheer openness of it. Serious walkers might find it a touch tame compared to the Ben Nevis circuit, though it's a lovely warm-up or cool-down option. From Fort William, it's a straightforward twenty-minute drive, making it ideal if you're staying at Ben Nevis Holiday Park and want a gentler half-day. The reserve never feels rammed, which is its biggest strength. You can actually hear the birds.
