Furzemoor Plantation

The woodland at Furzemoor Plantation, just outside Wallingford, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's not massive - you won't need a full day here - but it's genuinely worth an hour or so if you're camping nearby at Rolling Fields Glamping or Ridgeway View.

What you get is proper working forestry: mixed woodland with clearings, tracks that suit both a gentle stroll and a proper walk, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Oxfordshire in the first place. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is either refreshing or annoying depending on your mood. No gift shop. No queues. Just trees.

It works best for families who don't need activities laid on - kids love finding sticks and building things in the undergrowth - and for anyone wanting a break from the main tourist circuit around Wallingford. The terrain is fairly flat in places, muddy in others, so wellies are your friend after rain. Walkers heading out from the town centre will find this a decent addition to a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself.

Access appears to be free, though it pays to check before you go since information is thin on the ground. Best visited when it's not pouring, which narrows things down in winter. If you're based at one of the nearby campsites, it's exactly the sort of local spot that makes a holiday feel less like ticking boxes and more like actually living somewhere for a bit.
