Fun Fair - Cleethorpes Beach

The fairground at Cleethorpes Beach is exactly what you'd expect from a traditional British seaside resort - candy floss, screaming kids, and rides that have been going round since your parents were young. It's not Alton Towers, but that's rather the point. You get the standard mix: a log flume, dodgems, bumper cars, a ghost train that's more creaky than creepy, and enough shooting galleries and coin-operated games to drain your wallet if you're not careful. Most rides cost between two and five quid a pop, though you can buy ride tokens that work out cheaper if you're staying a few hours.

Who should bother? Families with younger children will get the most from it - the rides are geared towards the under-tens bracket, and there's enough variety to keep them entertained for an afternoon. If you've got teenagers expecting something with proper thrills, they'll be bored within ninety minutes. Fair warning: it gets rammed during school holidays, especially half-terms and summer.

Allow two to three hours if you've got small kids who want to do everything twice. The seafront location means you can walk straight from the beach, have a go on the rides, then grab fish and chips without moving far. It works well as a break during a week at Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park - literally a couple of miles down the coast - but don't ring-fence your entire afternoon for it. It's a top-up activity, not a destination.
