Fullwoodhead Hill

A modest summit near Lochwinnoch that rewards a decent walk with proper views across the Lowlands. Fullwoodhead Hill isn't dramatic - you're looking at maybe 300-odd metres - but the terrain keeps things interesting on the way up, and once you've crested it, the vistas spread out nicely toward the Clyde Valley and beyond.

The walk itself is the main draw. It takes a solid hour or so depending on your pace and which route you take from the surrounding woodland and farmland. You're not battling through dense forest the whole way, which keeps morale up. Walkers will find it a reasonable half-day excursion, especially if you loop it in with the nearby Lochwinnoch area - there's proper countryside round about, and the loch itself is worth seeing.

Families with kids aged eight and up would manage fine on a dry day. Younger children might struggle with the slog, though. The actual summit is anticlimactic in the way many Scottish peaks are - no dramatic trig point, just a sense of arrival and a decent panorama. That said, on a clear day you can see why locals bother with it.

If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean just down the road, this makes a natural morning walk to shake off the drive. Admission is free. No facilities at the summit itself, so bring water. Go in decent weather - cloud cover kills the whole point of climbing up here. Early autumn works well: drier paths and fewer midges than summer.
