Foxholes

The Foxholes landscape near Foscot tells the story of Iron Age hill fort engineering, though what you'll actually find today is mostly earthworks and a sense of place rather than dramatic ruins. This isn't Stonehenge - there are no standing stones or visitor centres, just the subtle contours of ancient defensive ditches and ramparts that have survived two thousand years of Gloucestershire weather.

It's a proper walker's destination, the kind of spot where you need to use your imagination a bit. The site itself is free to access, though you'll want proper shoes and ideally dry conditions, as the ground can get boggy in winter. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here, following the perimeter and trying to work out which bit was the entrance. Bring a decent guidebook if you're serious about the archaeology - the bones of it are fascinating, but the landscape won't explain itself.

History buffs will find it rewarding, especially those interested in how Iron Age communities fortified their settlements. It's less engaging for young children unless they're the type who enjoy rambling, but families based at nearby Cotswolds Meadow Glamping or Bluewood Lodges will find it a manageable afternoon outing. The location works as part of a wider Cotswolds walking circuit rather than as a standalone visit. Early morning or late afternoon light makes the earthworks more visible, so time your visit accordingly. Access is from the road near Foscot, though it's not signposted as such.
