Foxcote Gorse

Foxcote Gorse sits on the edge of the Cotswolds, a sprawling patch of woodland that feels properly remote despite being only a few miles from Cheltenham. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear birdsong without traffic noise bleeding through - which is rarer than you'd think in this corner of Gloucestershire.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland trails that wind through dense gorse and mixed forest. It's not dramatic or jaw-dropping. The paths are generally well-trodden, manageable for families with older children, though younger kids might find the terrain a bit uneven in places. Dog walkers clearly know this spot well - you'll see them regularly in the mornings.

The appeal is simple, really. If you're staying at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this gives you a proper woodland walk without driving far. Expect to spend an hour to ninety minutes here, depending on how deep you venture into the trees. There's something restorative about it - not showy, just honest woodland walking.

Bring decent boots if it's been wet. The gorse itself is fairly unremarkable unless you catch it flowering, but the overall experience scratches that "let's get into the trees for a bit" itch.
