Fox Hole Wood

You'll find Fox Hole Wood just a short drive south of Northallerton - it's one of those proper woodland walks that doesn't require booking or advance planning, which makes it ideal for a spontaneous afternoon outing. The forest is dense enough to feel like a real escape from the surrounding farmland, with narrow paths threading through mature trees and enough variation in terrain to keep things interesting.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a formal attraction with visitor facilities - there's no café, no interpretation boards, no car park attendant. Just woodland. The paths wind through at a decent pace, and you can easily spend an hour or two rambling without hitting crowds. Spring's particularly good when the bluebells come through, though autumn foliage gives it a different appeal. In winter, mud is a factor worth planning for.

If you're staying at Whorlton Pods - the local holiday park about four miles away - this makes a cracking half-day walk before you return for an evening by the fire. It won't occupy a full day on its own, but combined with exploring Northallerton's market town centre and a few other local walks, it slots neatly into a North Yorkshire break. Bring proper boots, especially after rain. No admission fee or facilities means no surprises on the day - just turn up and walk.
