Fox Hill

Fox Hill doesn't announce itself. It's Cambridge's best-kept secret - a modest rise on the eastern edge of the city that offers proper views across the Fens if you know where to look. The climb itself takes minutes, nothing strenuous, but that's partly the appeal. You get genuine high ground without the huffing and puffing of proper peaks elsewhere.

What strikes you most is how the landscape flattens out below. On a clear day you can trace the Cam winding through the city, and the great sprawl of fenland stretches toward the horizon. It's not dramatic or Alpine, but there's something quietly satisfying about standing above Cambridge and seeing how small it becomes from up here.

History types might appreciate the older earthworks scattered about - evidence of medieval and Iron Age activity, though nothing as obvious as a fort or settlement. Families with young kids will find it manageable, though the walk's only really worthwhile if you're interested in the views rather than expecting amenities or dramatic rock formations.

It works best as a bonus on a park-based holiday rather than a destination in itself. You're well placed from Cambridge Cherry Hinton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or the Cambridge Camping and Caravanning Club Site, both just 1.7 miles away. Pop up in late afternoon when the light's golden and you've got a proper little outing. Bring binoculars if you want to pick out landmarks across the Fens. It's free, it's quick, and it beats another circuit around the Backs.
