Fox Haw

Fox Haw sits above Dalton-in-Furness, a modest peak that punches above its weight on a clear day. It's not dramatic - no jagged ridges or scrambles - but the walk up rewards you with proper views across Morecambe Bay and back towards the Lake District hills. Allow about an hour to reach the top from the town and another hour to come back down. Most walkers tackle it as a half-day outing rather than part of something grander.

The appeal here is straightforward. If you're based at Fisherground Campsite nearby, this gives you a proper leg-stretch without requiring the full commitment of a proper fell walk. Families with teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the slog tedious unless they're already used to hills. The summit itself is unremarkable - no cairn or shelter to speak of - so you're really coming for the views and the exercise rather than a destination photo.

Timing matters. Morning light works best, and you want clear weather or the whole thing feels like a waste of effort. Damp underfoot is the norm in these parts, so proper boots aren't optional. It's free to walk, obviously, and there's no facilities on the hill itself.

It works well as a warm-up walk if you're planning bigger days on the fells proper, or as a morning jaunt if you're not keen on committing to a full Lakeland expedition. Nothing spectacular, but it does the job.
