Fox Crag

You've got to climb to earn the view at Fox Crag, and honestly, it's worth the leg work. Perched above Harrogate, this viewpoint delivers proper panoramic countryside - rolling moorland stretches out in every direction, and on a clear day you can pick out the shape of the landscape for miles. It's not a manicured tourist spot. There's no café, no gift shop, no crowds queuing for the photo. Just you, the wind, and genuinely lovely vistas.

Walkers love this place because it sits nicely on circular routes across the moors - easy enough for a decent afternoon ramble, challenging enough to feel like you've actually done something. The approach can be steep depending on which path you take from Harrogate, so it's not one for very young children or anyone who finds hills a slog. But if you're staying at Windmill Retreats nearby, it's a cracking morning out before breakfast, or an evening walk as the light softens.

Allow a couple of hours return from the car park, depending on your pace. Bring a jacket - exposure up there means the weather changes fast. There's no admission charge, which is refreshing.
