Four Marks Cemetery, just outside Alresford in Hampshire, has been left largely to nature, which means it's genuinely wild in places. You'll spot butterflies, birds, and plants you won't see in manicured parks.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get far more out of this than families with young children - there's no playground, no café, just peace and quiet paths threading through headstones and trees. The mix of horticultural neglect and intentional conservation creates something genuinely atmospheric. It's the sort of place you might spend forty minutes to an hour, depending on how much you want to linger.

Access appears to be free, though you'll want to check locally in Alresford before you go - opening times aren't always obvious for smaller reserves. The setting works well if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks: Hampshire Hills is less than two and a half miles away, making this a good morning or afternoon detour without needing to travel far. Wigwam Holidays and Woodlands Camping are also within easy reach.

Come in spring or early summer when the wildflowers are at their best. Autumn works too if you're after a quieter, more reflective visit. Fair warning though - it's not manicured or Instagram-friendly, and that's precisely what makes it worth the short drive from Alresford.
