Fort Hill

The walk up Fort Hill rewards you with proper views across Stranraer and out towards Loch Ryan. It's not a massive hike - more of a stiff climb that takes the best part of an hour if you take your time - but the effort pays off once you reach the summit.

You'll find the remains of an old fort up there, though calling it substantial might be generous. The earthworks and stone traces tell their story if you know how to read them, but don't expect dramatic ruins. What you're really here for is the vantage point. On a clear day the outlook sweeps across the town below and the loch stretches away beyond. Walkers and history types will get the most from it. Families with younger kids might find the summit a bit of a slog for what's essentially views and old ground works.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - bring water and decent shoes. The ground can be boggy in places. Free to access, obviously. Early morning or late afternoon light works best for photographs.

If you're staying at Sands of Luce Holiday Park just down the road, Fort Hill makes a solid afternoon's outing without requiring a major commitment. It's the sort of walk that breaks up a park holiday nicely - gets you moving, gets you out, doesn't eat the whole day. Stranraer itself sits at the gateway to the Rhins of Galloway, so there's plenty more pottering about to do in the area if the weather turns against you.
