Forest YMCA

The Forest YMCA sits on the edge of Epping Forest, a sprawling woodland that feels genuinely wild despite being practically on London's doorstep. It's a working residential and activity centre rather than a tourist attraction in the traditional sense, but the forest itself is what matters here. You get proper woodland walking - the kind where you lose sight of the city and actually hear birdsong instead of traffic.

For families, this works best as a base for exploring Epping Forest rather than a destination in itself. Kids who like scrambling over roots and spotting wildlife will spend hours here. Walkers and cyclists make good use of the forest trails that radiate out from the area. History types might appreciate that this woodland has been common land for centuries - there's real character in that. The Sewardstone and Chingford edges are particularly good for views out across Essex.

You'll want to allow at least a couple of hours for a decent walk. The forest is free to roam, though the YMCA itself is a private facility. If you're camping nearby at Lee Valley, this is a brilliant addition to your trip - the campsites are only 3-4 miles away, so easily manageable for a morning ramble or afternoon escape. Weekdays are quieter than weekends, which makes a real difference when you're trying to enjoy the peace.
