Forden Gaer

The earthworks at Forden Gaer sit quietly in the Powys countryside, about three miles south of Welshpool, and honestly they're the sort of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick stop. What you're looking at are the remains of a Roman fort from around AD 80, preserved as grassy banks and ditches that trace the outline of the original defences. If archaeology isn't your thing, it'll feel like a pleasant field walk with the odd interpretation board. If you're into Roman history, though, there's something genuinely moving about standing where soldiers once stood, watching the border country they were tasked to control.

The site works best for walkers and history enthusiasts with a bit of patience. You won't find reconstructed buildings or dramatic stonework here - this is the real archaeological deal, raw and unvarnished. Allow an hour if you're really exploring it, maybe thirty minutes if you're just passing through. The terrain is farmland so decent boots are worth considering, especially after rain.

As part of a caravan holiday based at one of the nearby parks - Rhyd-Y-Groes or Severn Caravan Resort are both within a few miles - it makes a solid half-morning outing. Pair it with a walk along the Severn or a visit to Welshpool's market town buzz, and you've got enough to fill a day without overdoing it. It's not flashy, but it's real.
