Fontmell Down

The walk up Fontmell Down rewards you with genuine 360-degree views across Dorset that make the leg work feel entirely justified. It's a proper chalk downland, the sort of place where you can see for miles on a clear day - towards Blackmore Vale to the north, the Dorset Hills rolling away south. The summit sits at around 700 feet, and the climb from Shaftesbury takes the best part of an hour depending on your pace and which path you fancy.

This is walkers' terrain, full stop. The grass is short, the paths are well-trodden, and there's nowhere here for kids to get bored if they're the outdoor type - space to run about, wildflowers in summer, the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people move to Dorset. Don't expect facilities. There's a car park at the base, but bring water and decent shoes. The southern side drops away steeply, so watch small children on windier days.

Timing matters. Early morning gets you there before the day heats up, and late afternoon light across the valleys is genuinely special. Spring and summer are obvious calls, but even November offers clarity you won't get in the south very often.
