Foirche (earthworks)

The earthworks at Foirche sit on a hillside near Pitlochry, and frankly, they're easy to walk straight past if you're not looking properly. What you're actually seeing are the remains of a Roman marching camp - low banks and ditches that once formed the defensive perimeter of a temporary military base, probably built during campaigns in the Highlands around 80 AD. It's not dramatic. There are no standing stones or visible structures, just the ghost of what was there in the landscape.

For archaeology enthusiasts and Roman history buffs, though, this is properly interesting. You're standing in the actual footprint of Roman occupation, and the site's location tells a story - it commands views of the Tay valley and the routes north. Walkers get the most from it, honestly. The site sits within easy striking distance of the parks around Pitlochry - Milton Of Fonab is barely a mile away - and makes a natural stop on a longer ramble through the area. Budget twenty minutes if you're already hiking, longer if you're coming specifically to look for the banks and ditches and understand what you're seeing.

It's free and open year-round, which is the only way it should be. Families with young children might find it a bit abstract - there's nothing to climb or explore physically - but older kids interested in history will find it rewarding. Rain and long grass can make the earthworks harder to spot in summer months, so go in autumn or winter when the ground is clearer.
