Foel y Geifr

Foel y Geifr sits about three miles outside Machynlleth, a modest Welsh peak that rewards a proper walk without demanding the fitness level of something like Cader Idris. The climb takes roughly ninety minutes from the nearest road access, and the view across the Dyfi Valley makes every step worth it. On a clear day you can see right across mid-Wales - the Cambrian Mountains roll out behind you, and Cardigan Bay glints in the distance if you're lucky.

It's not a destination for lazy strollers. The path kicks up steeply in places and the final approach involves a bit of scrambling over exposed rock, which kids under ten might find tricky. That said, it's genuinely rewarding for hill walkers who want something substantial but manageable in an afternoon. The peak itself isn't crowded - most visitors head to the bigger names, which means you'll likely have the summit mostly to yourself.

The terrain is typical Powys moorland: rough grass, heather, exposed ridges where the wind can bite properly even in summer. Bring decent boots and waterproofs - the weather changes fast up here. There's no café or facilities on the mountain itself, so take what you need.
