Foel Lwyd

The walk up Foel Lwyd from Borth takes you inland from the coastal strip into proper hill country. It's not a massive mountain - around 600 metres - but the views across Cardigan Bay and toward the Snowdonia peaks make the climb feel worthwhile.

You're looking at a solid two to three hours round trip depending on your fitness and which route you pick. The terrain is moorland and rough grassland, so decent boots are essential rather than optional. On a clear day the visibility stretches for miles. On a grey Welsh afternoon - which is likely - you'll get that dramatic, moody landscape that makes people fall in love with Mid Wales in the first place.

History buffs will appreciate the Iron Age hill fort remains scattered across the summit, though you need to know what you're looking for. It's not signposted or reconstructed. Families with younger children might find the walk a bit relentless without clear markers or obvious rewards at the top.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks near Borth - Searivers is closest at less than three miles away - this makes a cracking day out that doesn't require driving further. You get proper elevation and open air without battling crowds. Combine it with a stroll around Borth seafront afterward and you've got a decent day. Free to walk, obviously. Early autumn or late spring tend to be best, when the weather's more cooperative and the midges less aggressive.
