Flower's Barrow

You're looking at one of Dorset's most commanding hillforts, perched on the Isle of Purbeck with views that stretch across the Jurassic Coast. Flower's Barrow isn't flashy - it's a proper Iron Age affair, all ramparts and ditches, the kind of place where you can actually feel the weight of two thousand years pressing down. The walk up is steep enough to leave you catching your breath, but once you're there, standing on the inner earthworks, you understand why someone chose this spot to defend. The views across Poole Harbour and beyond are genuinely arresting.

This is walker territory, really. History buffs will spend a happy hour tracing the fort's layout and imagining the settlement that occupied it. Kids will find the scrambling about on the banks entertaining for a bit, though they'll lose interest once they've explored the perimeter - there's no visitor centre or interpretation here, just ancient lumps of earth and your own imagination. The walk from Wareham takes effort, and you need proper footwear. Allow three hours if you're doing a loop walk and want time to linger.

For a park holiday in the area, this works brilliantly as a morning expedition before heading to Durdle Door Holiday Park for something a bit less demanding. It's free, obviously - there's nothing stopping you walking up there any time. Go when the light's good and the crowds thin, probably autumn or early spring. This is earned landscape, the kind that rewards effort.
