Flinders Park

The flat Lincolnshire landscape doesn't prepare you for how much life Flinders Park actually contains. It's a proper nature reserve tucked near Boston, the sort of place where you can spend two hours watching nothing happen and somehow feel like you've done something worthwhile.

You get woodland paths that meander through decent old oak and beech, reed beds where the water birds hang about, and open grassland that changes character depending on the season. Spring brings the birdsong, autumn gives you fungi poking through the leaf litter. It's not dramatic - there are no sweeping vistas or crashing waterfalls - but that's rather the point. This is the kind of place where you notice things because they're actually there to be noticed.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those with binoculars and a field guide. Kids will enjoy a couple of hours of running around, though it won't keep them engaged all day. The paths are manageable for most ages, and there's enough to spot - insects, birds, the occasional small mammal - to keep younger ones interested.

If you're staying at nearby Orchard Holiday Park, Flinders is a genuine no-brainer of an afternoon outing. It's close enough to visit without making a whole day of it, but spacious enough that you won't feel rushed. Go when the weather's decent and you've got time to potter. Expect to bring your own sense of pace - this isn't the sort of place that's going to excite you if you're after an adrenaline hit.
