Fleetwood Beach

The seafront at Fleetwood stretches for miles - golden sand, proper working harbour, and on a clear day you can actually see across to Blackpool. It's the sort of beach that locals have known about for decades while day-trippers pile into more famous spots elsewhere.

What you get here is space. Miles of it. The promenade runs the length of the town with Victorian lampposts and benches facing the water, and the beach itself is wide enough that even in summer you won't feel crushed. The tidal mudflats mean you need to check timings before heading down - low tide reveals far more beach, high tide cuts things closer. Kids will find it decent enough for paddling and building castles, though it's not one of those theme-park beaches with arcades and doughnuts.

The harbour area is worth a wander. Working fishing boats still operate from here, and there's a real working-town feel rather than seaside-resort gloss. The Fleetwood Museum sits near the seafront if the weather turns, and the promenade walk towards Cleveleys is genuinely pleasant.

Bowses Hill Farm and the other campsites within four miles are well-positioned for this. You're close enough for a quick morning beach walk before heading out elsewhere, but far enough that you avoid the worst of the summer crush. Early morning visits work best - the light's better, it's quieter, and you'll appreciate why Fleetwood's locals keep coming back.
