The name alone raises eyebrows, but Fivehead is a genuine Somerset village with a proper nature reserve that's worth a detour if you're camping at Thorney Lakes nearby. It's not dramatic - no towering cliffs or dramatic water features - but that's rather the point. This is quiet wetland and grassland reserve where you'll actually spot things: dragonflies, water voles if you're lucky, and a decent population of birds that make twitchers genuinely excited.

The walking here is gentle and flat, which means families with young legs won't struggle and older visitors can manage the paths without needing to tackle steep gradients. Give yourself an hour to properly explore, longer if you've got binoculars and patience. Early morning or dusk are best for wildlife - midday can feel a bit sleepy.

It's free to access, and that counts for something. Within striking distance of Taunton, it makes a solid half-day outing, particularly if you're based at Thorney Lakes for a longer stay. Don't expect visitor facilities or shops - bring a packed lunch and proper footwear because it can get boggy. The reserve works best for people who actually enjoy standing still and watching rather than those needing constant entertainment. Children who like spotting creatures will find it rewarding; those after excitement might fidget after twenty minutes. Come out of season for the migratory birds, spring for the insects.
