Fishwick Bottoms Nature Reserve

The River Ribble winds through Fishwick Bottoms like it's got nowhere particular to be, and that's rather the point. This Lancashire nature reserve sits just outside Preston, a proper pocket of wet meadow and woodland where you can actually forget the town exists. What you'll find here are open grasslands that flood seasonally, creating ideal conditions for wading birds - lapwings, redshanks, curlews - alongside the usual suspects of woodland songbirds and the odd roe deer if you're patient enough.

The paths are straightforward, muddy in winter, and perfect for families with school-age kids who can manage a couple of miles without complaining.
