Walking into Fishpond Plantation feels like stepping into someone's well-kept woodland secret. The forest sits just outside Burton-on-Trent and offers proper easy access to dense tree cover - the kind of place where you can actually breathe without hearing traffic.

It's a straightforward woodland walk, nothing dramatic. Mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to lose the weekend crowd if you time it right. The whole thing takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, though you can knock around for half an hour if you're passing through. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so it's worth checking conditions before you go - muddy in winter, lovely in spring when the understory starts coming alive.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination that demands a full day, but it works brilliantly as a morning walk before heading into Burton or as a break during a longer weekend. If you're staying at Lane Tree Hideaways a few miles away, this is the sort of place to clear your head without faff.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour - there's no lake (despite the name), no viewpoints, just trees. Bring binoculars though and you'll spot woodland birds.
