Fishers Meadow

A proper slice of Gloucestershire wetland, Fishers Meadow sits just outside Gloucester and delivers exactly what you'd hope for - water, wildlife, and enough peace to actually hear yourself think. The reserve is genuinely brilliant for spotting birds. Herons, egrets, kingfishers if you're lucky and patient. The paths wind through wet grassland and alongside channels where you'll see dragonflies bombing about in summer.

It's not a destination that demands hours of your time. An hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're keen on photography or twitching. But that's rather the point. This is the sort of place you slip into between other activities, not the main event. Families with kids will find it manageable - the terrain is flat and straightforward, though it can get muddy after rain, so wellies are sensible.

The real value lies in how close it is to Gloucester itself. If you're based at any of the local caravan parks - The Glamping Orchard is barely two miles away, Gables Farm Campsite even closer - Fishers Meadow makes an excellent morning wander before heading into town proper. It's free and accessible at all hours, which is rather handy when you're staying nearby and fancy a quick leg-stretch.

Go early or late in the day when the birds are actually active. Midday is often quiet. Bring binoculars if you have them and reasonable footwear. Nothing fancy required, but bog-standard shoes will leave your feet damp.
