Fisherrow Links

The stretch of dunes and grassland at Fisherrow Links, just outside Musselburgh, is proper coastal Scotland without the crowds. It's a nature reserve that feels more like someone's secret than a marketed attraction - the kind of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident.

You get windswept dunes, marram grass whipping in the breeze, and views across the Firth of Forth that are genuinely worth standing still for. The walking is straightforward: paths thread through the reserve, and you can spend anything from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how far you fancy. Birdwatchers come here regularly - it's decent for spotting waders and the occasional migrant, especially in spring and autumn.

Families with older kids will have a good time mucking about on the dunes. Younger ones might find it a bit exposed and windswept for lingering, but it's free to wander and there's genuine space to burn off energy. Walkers heading between Musselburgh and Dunbar will find this a natural halfway point.

If you're camping at Drummohr or Haven Seton Sands, Fisherrow Links is close enough for an easy morning or late-afternoon visit without feeling like you're eating into your holiday schedule. The reserve is accessible year-round, though winter storms can make it properly wild and March through May offers the best for wildlife. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.
