Fisherrow Harbour

The working harbour at Fisherrow sits right on Musselburgh's doorstep, and it's a proper working place rather than a polished tourist attraction. Fishing boats still come and go, nets get mended on the quayside, and the smell of salt and diesel fuel reminds you this isn't a theme park version of seaside life. You can walk along the harbour wall, watch the boats, maybe grab fish and chips from one of the local spots nearby. It's free to wander about, though there's not a huge amount to do beyond half an hour of poking around unless you're genuinely interested in maritime activity.

Families with young kids might get bored quickly, if I'm honest. There are no attractions or facilities here - it's a functional space, not a destination in itself. But walkers and anyone keen on coastal views should factor it in as part of a longer explore along the shoreline. The light's best in late afternoon when the water catches the sun properly.

If you're staying at Drummohr Camping & Glamping Site just 2.3 miles away, or Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village a bit further out, Fisherrow makes a decent leg-stretcher on a day when the weather's decent. Combine it with a walk towards Portobello or a visit to Musselburgh town itself. Go at slack tide if you want the best photos - the exposed mudflats can look oddly atmospheric rather than just flat and grey.
