Fisherman's Walk Beach

The walk down to Fisherman's Beach near Christchurch is genuinely worth doing, especially if you've got a couple of hours to spare and the weather's on your side. You get proper coastal views as you descend - the kind that make you remember why you came to Dorset in the first place. The beach itself is backed by cliffs and has that working harbour feel to it rather than the sanitised resort vibe you find elsewhere along this stretch.

It's best for walkers and photographers. Families with restless toddlers might find it a bit much - the walk takes it out of you and there's not a great deal to occupy small children once you're down there. The promenade section is straightforward enough, but the path has some steps and uneven bits that need a bit of care. Allow a good hour each way if you're not a speed walker.

Don't bother on a grim grey day when the light's flat. Come when there's actual sunshine and the water's not brown. It's free to access, which helps when you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Meadowbank or Sandhills are both within a few miles. After Fisherman's Walk, you could loop back towards Christchurch town centre if you fancy a coffee, or just head back to your caravan for a rest. Honest assessment: it's a solid half-day activity, not a destination in itself, but part of a proper Dorset coast break it works well.
