It's a working fishing spot, so don't expect a theme park atmosphere, but that's rather the point. The banks are accessible enough for a wander, and on a quiet afternoon you'll understand why locals keep coming back.

This is best suited to walkers and anglers, or anyone who just wants a break from the coastal crowds around Plymouth. If you've got young kids expecting splash pads and ice cream kiosks, they'll struggle - but take teenagers or fishing enthusiasts and they'll happily spend a couple of hours here. The walk around is gentle rather than demanding, so it won't knacker you out.

There's no entrance fee as far as anyone can establish, and parking is straightforward. Allow an hour for a leisurely circuit, longer if you're standing about with a rod. Spring and early summer beat the winter months - the water's less moody and the light's better for photography.
