Fire Beacon

The walk up Fire Beacon rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb worthwhile. It's a modest peak near Holford in the Quantock Hills - nothing that will test experienced fell walkers, but steep enough to feel like you've earned the summit.

From the top, the Bristol Channel spreads out in front of you, and on a clear day you can see across to Wales. The peak itself is bare and windswept, which means the views aren't blocked by trees. There's a sense of exposure up there that makes it feel more dramatic than the height suggests.

Historically, this was one of a chain of beacon hills used to signal danger - hence the name. You won't find ruins or monuments, just the landscape itself and the knowledge that people once stood here watching for trouble. It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers after a proper sense of achievement without needing technical skills.

Allow about two hours for the round trip from Holford. The path is well-trodden but can be muddy, so decent boots matter. Go in winter when the air is clearer and the crowds are lighter. Summer brings families, which is fine if you don't mind company.

If you're staying at Moorhouse Campsite or Haven Doniford Bay, this makes an excellent half-day outing between lazier park days. It's close enough not to require a major expedition but gives you the satisfaction of actual walking rather than just ambling around a visitor centre.
