Fir Mounth

Fir Mounth is one of Scotland's ancient hill passes, a route that connected communities across the Cairngorms long before modern roads carved through the landscape. You won't find a visitor centre or café here - this is a proper walk through moorland and mountain terrain that demands respect and decent boots.

The pass itself sits high enough that weather can turn nasty in minutes, even when the forecast looks promising. Most people tackle it as a two-day expedition, though day walkers can cover sections of it from Aboyne and still get a genuine feel for why this mattered so much historically. The views across the Cairngorms are exceptional, mind you, but you'll have earned them.

If you're based at Firbank Park just outside Aboyne - genuinely one of the best-rated parks in the area - Fir Mounth makes for a serious day out or an overnight wilderness experience. Aboyne itself is a proper little base with shops and pubs, which helps. The pass connects properly with other Cairngorms routes if you're planning something more ambitious. It's not quick, it's not easy, but it's real.
