Fife: Forthview Parish Church St. Fillans

The churchyard sits quiet above the Firth of Forth, with St. Fillans' tower rising from among old gravestones and windswept trees. This is Forthview Parish Church, a proper working kirk that's been watching over Dunfermline's outskirts for centuries, and it's worth a detour if you're the sort who finds peace in churchyards and doesn't mind a bit of local history.

What you get is straightforward - a church with real character, the kind that still hosts services and hasn't been turned into a wedding venue or craft shop. The views across the water are the real draw here, especially on clearer days when you can actually see what you're looking at. It's not a ten-minute visit though. If you're coming from Dunfermline, allow a solid hour to poke around, read some of the older stones, and take in the setting properly.

This works well as a walking destination if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks. Pettycur Bay is only four miles away, or Sandhills if you've got a caravan. You could easily combine it with other coastal walks along the Forth - there's decent walking country around here. Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet, but if you've got teenagers interested in Scottish history or anyone who appreciates a proper old churchyard, they'll get something out of it. Spring's probably nicest when the trees aren't so bare, though winter has its own charm if you like that moody light off the water.
