Ffridd Esgairweddan

The walk up Ffridd Esgairweddan from Machynlleth isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to get your heart going. Once you crest the ridge, the Cambrian Mountains sprawl out in front of you - proper wild country, that. On a clear day you can see right across to the coast.

This is fell-walking territory, not a gentle stroll. The peak itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic crags or rocky outcrops - but the views justify the effort. Machynlleth sits below like a toy town, and if the weather cooperates, you'll pick out peaks all the way to Snowdonia. Timing matters here. Come in afternoon sun and the light across the valleys is stunning. Arrive on a grey, drizzly day and you'll wonder why you bothered.

It's a proper hike for anyone comfortable with rough paths and a bit of scrambling. Families with younger kids might find it tedious - probably ninety minutes up and back, depending on fitness. Better suited to walkers who actually enjoy the going, not just the destination.

If you're based at Gwerniago Campsite nearby, this works well as a morning excursion before the weather deteriorates. Allow two hours total including stops. Bring waterproofs - the Welsh hills can turn quickly. No facilities up there, so take water and a snack. Free to walk, obviously. Go early if it's summer - the carpark fills fast with other hikers chasing views.
