Fewston Reservoir

The water here is impossibly still most days, a sheet of grey-blue that mirrors the moorland rising up on either side. Fewston Reservoir, just a few miles north of Harrogate, isn't showy or dramatic - there's no visitor centre, no cafe, no carved walkway telling you where to stand for the perfect photograph. That's rather the point.

It's a working reservoir serving the town, but it's also genuinely pleasant to walk around. The footpath hugs the western shore and takes about forty minutes if you're not stopping, longer if you actually look at things. Walkers and birdwatchers come here regularly. You'll spot curlews, mallard, the occasional cormorant diving. In winter the water draws migrating species; summer is quieter but you're less likely to be trudging through bog.

The moorland setting means it feels more remote than it is - proper Yorkshire grit, not manicured parkland. There are benches if you want to sit and stare. There's nothing to do but walk, really, which means it's not for fidgety kids wanting attractions and activities. But if your family actually enjoys being outdoors without distraction, it's worth the detour.

Free, obviously. Go early morning if the weather's decent - by late afternoon the light gets a bit grim and walkers thin out. Pair it with stays at Windmill Retreats or Breaks Fold Farm Glamping just down the road for a proper Dales break. Harrogate itself is close enough for shops and meals if you need to escape the tent.
