Fellows' Garden

Christ's College keeps this one tucked away, and that's part of the appeal. Fellows' Garden sits behind the main college buildings in Cambridge, a proper respite from the tourist crush along the Backs. You're walking into four centuries of horticultural care here - Fellows have been tending these lawns and borders since the 1600s, which does something to the atmosphere that newer gardens simply can't replicate.

The space itself is intimate rather than grand. Mature trees frame the boundaries, there's a small pond that's surprisingly peaceful, and the planting feels considered without being showy. On a decent day, it's exactly the kind of place where an hour disappears without you noticing. History types will appreciate the bones of the place; walkers might find it a bit confined after a good trek, but families with younger children tend to gravitate here because there's room to breathe without feeling exposed.

Access requires you to go through the college, which can be fiddly depending on what's happening that day - it's worth checking ahead or asking at the lodge. Admission is typically free for genuine visitors, though hours are variable. Summer is the obvious season, but late spring when the borders are really going is arguably better - fewer people, same flowers.

If you're staying at Hempsall Farm or Fen End Farm nearby, it's a straightforward cycle into Cambridge and worth adding to a college trail. Don't expect Kew-scale spectacle. Do expect somewhere that feels genuinely lived-in by people who care about gardens.
