Fellbarrow

Standing at 1,902 feet, Fellbarrow commands views across the northern Lake District that'll make you forget you're not on something more famous. The walk from Cockermouth side is straightforward enough - a proper leg-stretcher rather than a technical climb, following fell paths that open up gradually as you gain height. What strikes you most is the sense of space up here. You're high enough to see real distance, low enough that it doesn't feel like a serious mountaineering venture.

It's the sort of fell that rewards walkers more than photographers. The rocky summit itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but the 360-degree panorama tells the story - Skiddaw and Blencathra dominate to the east, the Solway Firth glints north, and westward you can pick out Cockermouth itself in the valley below. Allow three hours for a round trip if you're starting from the foothills, less if you're particularly speedy.

Families with decent-aged kids (eight upwards) will find it manageable. Younger ones might struggle with the steepness of certain sections, and there's little to keep anyone entertained beyond the views. Walkers using it as part of a longer circuit find it pairs well with the neighbouring peaks - it's a decent warm-up rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite or Greysouthen, you're perfectly placed for an early morning assault. The approach from Cockermouth is straightforward, and there's genuine quiet up there - fewer people than the main Lake District honeypots, which is exactly why it's worth the drive.
