Feizor Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a polished attraction, Feizor Wood sits just south of Lancaster and delivers exactly what you'd want from a forest ramble in North Yorkshire. The paths thread through mixed woodland - oak, ash, beech - with decent undergrowth that keeps things feeling wild. There's a small stream running through the lower sections, which kids tend to find more interesting than yet another stretch of trees.

Walkers will clock this as a solid two-hour outing at a gentle pace, nothing punishing but enough to work up an appetite. The woodland floor is a bit muddy even when it hasn't rained recently, so proper boots are non-negotiable. Spring's when it looks best - bluebells do their thing here - though autumn has its charm if you're after muted colour and fewer people.

It's free, obvious really given there's no infrastructure to speak of. No cafes, no visitor centre, just the wood itself. That's rather the point. The nearest car park situation can be a touch fiddly depending which entrance you pick, so factor in ten minutes of local navigation.

If you're bunking down at Peaks and Pods five miles away, this makes a natural half-day excursion. Close enough not to burn petrol, quiet enough to feel like proper countryside. Families with primary-school kids will manage fine; younger toddlers might find the distance dull. It's not a destination on its own merits - it's the sort of place you factor into a broader North Yorkshire loop.
