Farthing Wood

The woodland around Farthing Wood, just inland from Winchelsea, is proper Sussex - dense, dark in places, and the sort of forest that makes you feel like you've stepped back a couple of centuries. It's not a manicured attraction with visitor centres or marked trails (at least not officially), but rather a genuine working woodland where you can walk among ancient oaks and beech without the crowds.

Walkers will find it rewarding. The terrain is uneven, muddy after rain, and demands proper footwear - not a stroll but a proper woodland ramble. The canopy is thick enough that you're shaded even on bright days, which is lovely when the weather turns warm. You could easily spend two to three hours here depending on how lost you want to get.

It's less of a destination for small children and more for anyone who actually enjoys being in woods rather than visiting a wood. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water. Families with older kids who like exploring will manage fine; those expecting playground-style attractions should look elsewhere.

Farthing Wood works well as part of a wider day around the Winchelsea area. Rye Harbour Holiday Park and Winchelsea Sands are both within easy reach if you're basing yourself nearby. The coastal towns have more obvious attractions, but this woodland is the sort of place that rewards you for venturing slightly off the beaten path - quieter and more authentic than you'd expect in South East England.
