Farndon Parish Church

The sandstone tower of Farndon Parish Church rises above the village about three miles south of Chester, and it's worth stopping for if you're doing the loop around this part of Cheshire. The building itself dates back to the 12th century, though it's been mucked about with since - the Victorians got their hands on it, naturally. Inside, there's decent medieval stonework and some proper atmospheric corners if you like that sort of thing.

It's a working parish church, so opening times depend on services and the vicar's mood, but the churchyard is usually accessible. That's where the real draw is for most visitors - the views across the Dee valley are genuinely pleasant, and if you're staying at Manor Wood just down the road, you can walk here in about half an hour without breaking a sweat. The graveyard itself is peaceful, with some interesting old stones if you're into that.

History nerds will spend an hour poking about. Families with small children will spend twenty minutes and move on. It's free to have a look, though donations are encouraged. The village of Farndon itself is charming enough for a post-church wander - there's a pub if you need one. Come mid-week when tour groups aren't clogging up Chester proper, and you'll have the place virtually to yourself. Not a major destination, but a solid cultural breather if you're based nearby.
