Far Oakridge Barrow

You'll find yourself on a grassy hillside somewhere between Stroud and the Cotswold escarpment, standing in front of what looks like an unremarkable mound - until you realise you're looking at a Neolithic burial chamber that's been here for around 5,500 years. Far Oakridge Barrow is the real deal: a long barrow that once held the remains of early farming communities, though it's heavily overgrown these days and requires a decent trek across fields to reach it.

This one's for serious archaeology enthusiasts and dedicated walkers rather than casual family groups. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café - just you, the landscape, and the weight of deep time. You get out what you put in, and if you're the type who finds excitement in reading the contours of the land itself, it's genuinely absorbing. The walk from Stroud is substantial enough to separate the keen from the casual, which keeps it refreshingly quiet.

Allow a couple of hours including the walk. Check conditions after rain - the approach can be muddy. There's no admission charge because there's nothing here to charge for, which is half the appeal.

If you're camping nearby at one of the sites around Stroud - Tobacconist Farm or Middle Lypiatt are closest - this works as an excellent morning adventure before heading to somewhere with more facilities. Pair it with a walk along the escarpment edge for a proper day out in the Cotswolds.
