Far Lair

Far Lair sits on the moors above Ilkley, a proper Iron Age settlement that's genuinely worth seeking out if you're in the area. What you're looking at are the remains of defensive ditches and ramparts - the sort of thing that makes you stop and think about who lived here two thousand years ago and why they felt the need to fort up on this exposed hilltop.

It's not a visitor centre with interpretive boards or anything. You get the archaeology itself, the views across Wharfedale, and your own imagination filling in the blanks. That's rather the appeal, frankly. Walkers love it because it slots neatly into a moor walk, and the effort to reach it adds something - you feel like you've earned the discovery. History types will geek out over the earthwork patterns.

There's no charge, no set hours. You just turn up and have a look. Allow an hour if you're planning to explore the site properly and soak in the views. Go on a clear day when the light hits the ramparts properly - moody weather is atmospheric but makes the details harder to spot.
