Far Cotton Recreation Ground (Far Cotton REC)

The meadows around Far Cotton feel properly wild for somewhere just north of Northampton town centre. You get a genuine nature reserve here - the sort of place where locals actually go to spot birds rather than snap selfies. The ground itself is open grassland with woodland edges, managed specifically for wildlife, and there's a real sense you're away from the suburbs even though you're minutes from built-up areas.

It's ideal if you're after a quiet walk and you've got binoculars in your bag. Birdwatchers will find it genuinely rewarding, particularly in spring and autumn migrations. The reserve draws regular visitors who know what they're looking for - it's not somewhere you'll find a visitor centre or interpretive boards, just decent habitat and the chance to actually see something. Families with older kids who enjoy nature walks rather than playgrounds will appreciate it; younger children might find it a bit samey after half an hour.
