Falls of Divach

Water crashes down a rocky gorge with real force here, and the sound hits you before you even see it properly. The Falls of Divach near Drumnadrochit aren't some delicate trickle - they're a proper torrent that tears through the Highland landscape just inland from Loch Ness.

It's a straightforward walk from the car park, nothing too demanding, though the path gets muddy when it rains (which it does, frequently). You'll spend maybe 20 to 30 minutes getting a good look at the falls themselves - the main event is the cascade dropping into a dark pool below, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and ancient-looking trees. Photography types will find decent angles, especially in late afternoon light.

Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already excited about waterfalls - there's not much to actually do once you've taken the photos and watched the water for a bit. The walk itself is the thing, really.

If you're staying at Loch Ness Glamping or the Loch Ness Shores site nearby, it's worth the short drive as a morning activity before heading elsewhere. It's free, naturally, and works well as a warm-up to a bigger day out. Don't expect crowds, even in summer. The Highlands have plenty of waterfall spots, and this one's solid but not extraordinary - useful rather than unmissable.
