Falkland Palace & Garden (National Trust for Scotland)

The first thing that hits you about Falkland Palace is how intact it feels - this isn't a ruin, it's a proper royal residence that's been lived in for five centuries. Built in the 1500s as a hunting lodge for the Scottish kings, it sits right in the heart of the village of Falkland, about four miles from Glenrothes. You get the Renaissance courtyard, the chapel with its original oak roof, and rooms that genuinely transport you back. The gardens are the real draw for many - walled and planted with fruit trees and herbaceous borders that look brilliant in summer. It's managed by the National Trust for Scotland, and the whole experience feels less museum, more 'we're letting you into someone's home'.

Walking the grounds takes a solid two hours if you're doing it properly. History buffs will spend longer; families with younger kids might find an hour enough, though the gardens give everyone space to roam without feeling cooped up. The village itself is charming without being twee - there's a decent tearoom and proper shops, which beats standing in a gift shop queue.

Stay at Balbirnie Park or Wild Goose Glamping, both within easy reach, and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Kingdom Caravan Park and Annsmuir are slightly further but still close enough. Combine it with a walk around the village or a visit to nearby attractions in Fife - it works well as part of a longer holiday rather than a standalone trip. Spring and early summer are best; the palace gardens are worth timing for that.
