Fakenham Magna Suffolk

East of Bury Saint Edmunds, Fakenham Magna nature reserve sits quietly in the Suffolk countryside - the sort of place you'd miss if you weren't looking for it. It's a modest woodland and wetland site, nothing flashy, but genuinely worthwhile if you're after a proper walk without the crowds.

The reserve works well for families who don't need constant novelty. Children can manage the paths easily enough, and there's enough to spot - birds, insects, the odd splash of wildflowers depending on season - to keep them engaged for an hour or so. Serious birdwatchers and nature photographers will find it rewarding too; the wetland areas attract decent species, particularly in spring and autumn migrations.

Walkers get a decent loop without it turning into an epic undertaking. You're looking at maybe 90 minutes to two hours if you actually stop and look about rather than just plough through. The paths are generally clear, though they can get boggy in winter - wellies not a bad shout.

Best visited in early morning when the wildlife is actually active rather than hiding from the midday heat. It's free to access, which is refreshing. If you're based at Arthur's Retreat motorhome site just down the road, this makes a fine morning's diversion before heading elsewhere. Don't expect dramatic views or facilities - there's a car park and that's your lot - but that's rather the point. It's genuine Suffolk countryside, undressed and honest.
