Fairlop Waters Country Park

The old gravel pit at Fairlop Waters has been transformed into something genuinely worth a morning or afternoon. Once you get there - just east of London in Essex - you've got a proper country park with a lake at its heart, walking trails that actually connect to somewhere, and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by other visitors on a weekend.

The main draw is the water. There's a sailing club here, so you'll see boats moving about, which adds life to the place. The lakeside paths are flat and well-trodden, making them manageable for families with younger kids or anyone not keen on hills. Expect to walk for forty minutes to an hour if you do a full loop - nothing strenuous. There's woodland to one side, open grassland on the other, and on a clear day the light across the water is genuinely lovely.

It's the sort of place that works best mid-week or early morning at weekends. Come on a hot summer afternoon and you'll be squinting into crowds. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - there's decent birdwatching here, particularly during migration seasons.

For a camping trip nearby, Lee Valley Campsite over in Sewardstone is within striking distance, making Fairlop Waters an easy add-on to a longer park stay. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's honest and it works. Good for a proper walk without needing to drive more than thirty minutes from central London.
